My friend told me that there are 720 DVDs and are not converted in 1080 for the image quality that the blue ray - no matter what a DVD player with upscaling. I am confused why people buy Upconvert DVD player?

When you invest in a new player to consider buying only one player TrueHD (Blu-ray).
It is not clear without more ado, which is better - until then the player or the TV is. It may not make much difference. However, the conversion for the best players can (as the existing HD-DVD make) a good job, better than most TV.
One reason for the DVD player in May is better than the pictures on the disc are progressive and not de-interlacing is necessary. (This is not always true for any upconversion DVD player, at least the last model, extract the disc image 60i). This means that all frames of the original resolution of the film plays in the amount of 60p.
But just because it might be better not necessarily better. You need to read the comments.
