I do not know if it had a state law, or only his employer but a friend of mine (in Idaho, not New York) for 30 days to avoid again that the cost of pay insurance for their permission.

You should be able to ask your personnel department, without fear of reprisals. I live in New York and told a colleague (I never asked, human resources, as I still want to come back) that would one day return, and issue an opinion. But you have to have someone who really knows to ask the answer. Good luck.
